Bender's Brainiacs : Periods 3 & 5 English
Writing and English skills are taught from a variety of sources including teacher-generated materials, trade books, student writing and state adopted texts. Students will do creative, essay, journal, and research report writing during the course of the year.  Essay terminology and structure will follow the Jane Schaffer model.Vocabulary  words will be generated from literature, weekly crossword puzzles, and examination of common root words, prefixes and suffixes.    Grammar spelling, and writing mechanics are taught and reinforced through student writing, daily language practice, sentence diagramming, and the grammar workbook.

We will  read and closely examine novels from the reading and social studies curriculum.  Class novels and literature circles will be used to examine the different genres of literature.  An author study project is required the first semester.      The reading anthology is Timeless Voices, Timeless Themes, by Prentice Hall.  The writing and grammar text is Communication in Action by Prentice Hall and the weekly crosswords are from Crosswords for Spelling by Christine Thornton.

Second Semester
We have started the second semester. What that means is spending a lot of time prepping for the state tests in April.  Every Monday the kids will take a mini reading comp/vocabulary test in the testing format. Along with DLR, we are beginning our unit on sentence diagramming, to help students understand sentence structure and grammar. The novel for third quarter is The Golden Goblet, a historical fiction novel about Ancient Egypt. Reading comprehension, vocabulary work, and journal writing enhance their learning. We will also have a school wide writing exam and my kids will write a response to literature from The Golden Goblet.  We will study Greek Mythology when we start learning the Greek Culture in social studies.

GATE Dana Point Trip
I handed out trip information paperwork and permission slips for the Ocean Institute's Sea Floor Explorer Overnight. Please read the information carefully and discuss with your child. This is not a class field trip, but a GATE extra curricular trip.  It is limited to the first 42 kids to have their paperwork completed and turned into me, with the $100 check. Your child MUST meet the academic requirements. He or she cannot be failing any class to sign up. The trip is Oct 20 – 21st and money and paperwork needs to be turned in by Oct 10th.

Literature Study
The Phantom Tollbooth
We have begun our literature study with The Phantom Tollbooth. A classic fantasy novel that stretches the kids imaginations as they grapple with the figurative language, word plays, puns, and the theme.  Students have a copy checked out to them, so they need to have them everyday. It is a fun piece which I think the kids will enjoy.
6th Grade Spirit Olympics and Ice Cream Social
Show your spirit Falcons! This Friday is the Spirit Olympics. We need to beat the other teams in spirit and competition! First, wear as much blue as you can!  Make blue Falcon posters. Wear blue facepaint. You can even spray paint your hair blue...get the washout spary color for hair! Second, we will be out on the field and in the quad for two hours, so remember to dress cool and use sunscreen. You can wear a hat for the sun on Friday, and bring a beach towel to sit on the grass.  WATER bottles to drink from is a good idea too.  But, the most important thing is to bring a spirited attitude! Support our team members! Remember,  Falcons soar Above the Rest!
Parent Letter and Survey

Parents,
Please fill out the white survey and have your child return it to me as quickly as possible.  If you would print your e-mail address on the form, it would help facilitate a more accurate input of parent e-mails. Once your e-mail is entered into Teacherease, you will receive a password, which you can change, to begin accessing grades and other information.  Thanks!  Mrs. Bender

Welcome to the Falcons Team!
Welcome to Moore and to the Falcons team.  Prepare yourselves to have a great 6th grade year, full of excitement, adventure, academic challenges, and the makings of lasting friendships.  I look forward to meeting all of you and helping each one of you to become the best Monarch/Falcon at Moore!  Get ready!
